Modern farmhouse renovation, Phoenixville: Family Room Transformation

This room was the starting point on this modern farmhouse renovation. It is the gathering point in the house, and it is connected to the kitchen. I had a vision for this house and it started here. I wanted to incorporate some really cool design features with the 20 feet ceilings. I also wanted the space to feel warmer and inviting. I decided to start with the fireplace. The fireplace had so much potential but as it stood....BORING & OUTDATED! The rose curtains had to go... or better yet be burned. It appeared as though they had never been cleaned in 20 years with the amount of bugs that fell off of them and the dust that immediately sent me sneezing... So here is the before picture.

With the fireplace I began by adding dimension and height. I also used bright white paint to begin lighting up the room. I did a custom box pattern to dress up the wall and make it a central focal point. Here are some in progress pictures. I used the primed MDF board for this. I then added crown molding trim at the top.

I wanted to set the vision for house with a modern farmhouse feel. I wanted bright white with a touch of rustic. So after I finished the fireplace I began adding board and batten. We put a light gray on the walls (Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore).

Next I wanted to add some dimension. I had the crazy idea of building and installing beams on the 20 feet ceilings. So that is what we did... They turned out beautiful. We did custom metal accents on all of them. Then David made custom orb lights to hang down in between. We also installed a new ceiling fan.

Finally, we built custom furniture for the room including: 4 floating shelves on the wall, a framed out TV, huge console storage table, rustic x coffee table, and rustic x end tables. We added dark walnut Levolor blinds and decorated. The space was totally transfomed into an inviting, warm space to hang out with the family.  What you think?
